Your Appointment

Patient Information

Everything you need to know before, during, and after your osteopathic treatment — from what to expect at your first appointment to aftercare advice and frequently asked questions.

Your First Visit

What to Expect

Your first appointment is longer than follow-up sessions, allowing time for a thorough assessment before any treatment begins.

01

Case History

We begin with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and any relevant medications. This helps me build a complete picture of your health and understand what may be contributing to your condition.

02

Physical Examination

I will assess your posture, movement, and the affected area — and may also examine other parts of the body that could be contributing to your symptoms. You may be asked to perform some simple movements.

03

Diagnosis & Discussion

I will explain my findings, discuss a diagnosis, and outline a proposed treatment plan. This is a good opportunity to ask any questions you may have before treatment begins.

04

Hands-On Treatment

Treatment uses a combination of soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, stretching, and — where appropriate — manipulation, dry needling, or kinesio taping. Techniques are always adapted to your comfort level.

05

Aftercare & Advice

Before you leave, I will provide personalised advice on exercises, posture, activity modification, and anything else that will support your recovery between sessions.

06

Follow-Up Plan

We will agree on a follow-up plan based on your condition and how you respond to treatment. Follow-up appointments are typically 45 minutes and focus on reassessment and continued treatment.

After Your Treatment

Aftercare Advice

What you do after your appointment can make a real difference to how well and how quickly you recover. Here's what I recommend.

What to Do

  • Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins released during treatment
  • Rest if you feel tired — your body is doing important work
  • Perform any exercises or stretches I have recommended
  • Apply a warm heat pack to sore areas if helpful
  • Keep gently moving — light activity is usually beneficial
  • Contact me if you have any concerns after your appointment

What to Avoid

  • Strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for 24–48 hours after treatment
  • Alcohol on the day of treatment
  • Long periods of sitting or staying in one position
  • Applying ice directly to skin — always wrap in a cloth
  • Ignoring significant increases in pain or new symptoms
  • Missing follow-up appointments — consistency supports recovery

Normal Reactions

It is completely normal to experience some of the following in the 24–48 hours after treatment:

  • Mild aching or soreness in the treated area
  • Feeling tired or lethargic
  • Temporary increase in symptoms before improvement
  • Feeling of warmth or mild bruising
  • Heightened awareness of your body

If you experience severe pain, numbness, or symptoms that concern you, please contact me or seek medical advice.
